Do you know what day of the month it is?
More importantly, do you know what day of your menstrual cycle you’re on?
If you’re like many women, you are probably pretty mystified by your period and cycle in general, so you’re not alone if you don’t know.
I used to be that girl. At doctor’s appointments, when the inevitable question was asked “When was your last period Nicole?”, I’d look like I was thinking really hard and say “Oh, my period was March 9th” with so much confidence.
Ha, of course I was lying through my teeth because I had absolutely no idea! Little did I know then that not knowing those simple facts would be rather detrimental to my health later on.
My Period Story had a rocky start
Some of you know my story and in fact many of you are probably living in one stage or another of my “period story.” It all began in my teens (doesn’t it always? *wink*), with really really ferocious periods.
My mom said, “you think this is bad Nicole? I used to be in bed for days at a time.” Ugh. So I just accepted that this must be my lot in life.
Then something strange happened. I stopped getting my period every month. Hmmm…that didn’t seem quite right but a huge part of me was relieved that I didn’t have to deal with the period drama every month.
The problem is, when your period stops, it doesn’t usually start again unless you make some changes. And I was not making any changes. To be fair, I didn’t even know I needed to make changes!
My Period Panacea or?
So off I went to the gynecologist where I was prescribed the birth control pill and sent on my way. I took it for 5 years. I got my period every month, it lasted for maybe two days, had barely any cramps, no bloating, none of the she-monster mood swings….a girl’s dream come true right?
At first I thought so but over time I noticed a whole lot of other issues cropping up.
Dry skin, eyes, hair and nails, chronic yeast infections, chronic urinary tract infections, chronic colds, IBS-like stomach problems, even a low sex drive (in my early 20’s!). Oh and joint pain. Lots of joint pain. I was an old, sick lady in a 20 year old body.
All of these symptoms were evidence that the pill was no longer working for me. However, it took me a little while to figure that out!
Instead I saw a lot of conventional doctors who did a lot of tests and I got nothing. One thought I had Crohn’s disease, another thought it was rheumatoid arthritis (my mom has it so naturally I was a candidate).
Yet another doctor diagnosed IBS. My gynecologist suggested I try a vaginal estrogen cream to get my sex drive back. Oy vey.
Taking matters into my own hands!
Clearly this approach was not working. So I decided to take back the reins and steer my health in a different direction.
It led me to an acupuncturist, a little Chinese man named Dr. Kim who at 65 had more energy than my 23-year old self. In the first visit he diagnosed and explained all of my ailments. Miraculous.
I’d been trying to get a straight answer for years and this dude gave me what I needed in 30 minutes.
I saw him for years and he blew the door off my conventional-medicine ways of thinking. I was introduced to herbs, better ways of eating, bio-feedback, qi-gong…you name it. I also finally ditched my pill and started getting my period normally for the first time in my life.
For years I tried every alternative medical treatment out there – network spinal analysis, colonics, infra-red saunas, laser hair removal – oh does that not count? Haha!
This led me to The Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York where I got certified to be a holistic health coach. I knew I had to help as many women as I could get my hands on so I then went on to train with Dr. Sara Gottfried, the queen of hormonal health, Dr. Jessica Drummond and Chris Kresser – masters in the field of women’s health and functional medicine.
Why the heck this should matter for you?
It’s been 14 years since I first saw Dr. Kim and changed the trajectory of my life. Back then if you had told me I’d be doing what I do now I’d have said, “Girl, puleese!” Yet here I am. Your personal period fixer-upper!
Back in 2012 I created Fix Your Period, a series of programs to help women heal their menstrual conditions in a sassy and fun way. I designed my programs on the belief that fixing your period doesn’t have to be painful or difficult, but rather fun.
It takes effort, but doesn’t have to be hard; I’m not trying to restrict anybody – I literally want flow; once your body is flowing, your period will follow. I also don’t want it to be overwhelming – because menstrual problems are overwhelming enough!
This has been a number of years in the making and I’m beyond thrilled to continue to share my work with women all over the world who might not otherwise have access to this kind of information.
If you’re a woman who is in 1 of 2 places…
1. You’ve tried everything – birth control, medication…maybe even surgery – and STILL your menstrual health is a mess.
OR
2. You feel lost and don’t know what to do, who to trust, or where to start.
…then I am speaking to you girl!
If you’re identifying with being in one of those two places, or something like that, then this program is for you. You can learn all about the Fix Your Period programs here!
Here’s to Happy Hormones for you!
xoxo

i started my period when i was 11 and in elementary school. early right? but my story takes place when i was 14. i had my period for about a year, so i had experience and i knew the facts. it was during the summer, so i was at home with my brothers (i have 2), they were 15 and 16 at the time, and my parents were at work so it was just me and my brothers. anyways, i woke up that morning, with painful cramps and a craving for chocolate. so i went to the bathroom, and realized that i had started my period. i didnt freak out, i was just kind of bummed out because i was going to go to a sporting event with my friends, but didnt want to deal with the pain of cramps and having to carry around tampons. so i put on a pad (i use pads at home and tampons when im out and active), and went to get breakfast. neither of my brothers were awake, and i was really hungry, so i decided to cook some eggs and toast. while i was cooking, my brothers woke up, so i ended up cooking for them too. so when we were done, we were just sitting in the living room watching tv and playing on our phones. while i was sitting there, my cramps got WAY WORSE. like so bad that i couldnt even move. i let out a loud groan, and got up to get Midol. after i came back to lay on the couch, my oldest brother asked me what was wrong. i said that i had really bad cramps. he continued to ask why, so i eventually just said “Im bleeding out of my vagina” and then he stopped asking questions.
later that night, when we all got home from the game, i went to shower and change from a tampon to a pad for the night, but then i realized that i dont have anymore pads !! so i ended up telling my mom and she was able to take me to the store to get more.
it wasnt really eventful, but theres my story
i meant to say i had my period for about 3 years
11?! Early? nice story. but 11 is not early.
I was in 7th grade and I was 12. At the moment I was at my brothers house. I have 3 brothers 21,19, and 16. My two oldest brothers shared an apartment since they went to the same university. So all of my brothers were in the house at the moment. And I got up from the couch to use the restroom and I was highly uneducated about periods. So when I went to wipe, there was blood. I didn’t know what was happening but I didn’t want to tell my brothers because it had something to do with my vag. I had to stay there with them for a week since it was my parents anniversary and they went to the Bahamas. So I didn’t have my mom to go to. And I didn’t take health ed at school because my mom said no for some reason. So, I just wiped. And went back to sit on the couch and play video games. So that night I didn’t have anything prepared like pads or tampons so I just went to sleep. I slept with my brother on his bed because their apartment has 3 rooms and I didn’t want to sleep with my 16 or 19 year old brothers because they snore and they are wild sleepers. So I slept with my 21 year old brother. And when I woke up the next morning, there was a huge blood stain on my clothes and on the bed. I woke up before my brother. And I started panicking because I didn’t know how to get the stain out and I didn’t want him to know but I couldn’t get the stain out so I just sat on the floor and cried. My brother woke up and saw me and asked me what’s wrong. I didn’t say anything. So he sat next to me and kept on asking so I just got up and showed him the bed. When he saw it he said ‘oh’ awkwardly which made me cry even more. When he saw how upset I was he gave me a hug and said that it was ok. I said ‘no it’s not, I messed up your bed’ so he told me to take a shower and get changed and then me and him went to the store and we bought pads and tampons. I didn’t know how to apply the tampons. When I first put it in I left the applicator in with it lol. But I read how to insert it and I removed it. It was good I guess. I helped him clean the sheets and then he bought me candy and a heating pad and pills. I made him promise not to tell my other brothers and he didn’t and when my mom finally came home. I didn’t tell her either. She eventually found out!
Oh, big brother to the rescue! That’s a sweet story 🙂 thanks for sharing!
Oh, your big brother is so nice!! My older brother found out he awkwardly said “congrats”. I had heard him on a FaceTime call with his friends, and one of them told him to make a chocolate cake and frost it with red frosting, but he didn’t listen. No one said that big brother’s are smart. I really want a cake.
So sweet of him!! My big brother told me “congrats” and waited for me to figure it out.turns out I accidentally threw away a pad DRENCHED in blood in the bathroom we shared. I craved chocolate and he knew it, then he bought me a package of chocolates.😊
I was sitting on my dads bed watching Grease when I stood up and realized that blood has soaked through my jeans and soaked into my mom and dads bed. I put water on it and scrubbed it. I then put stain remover on it, grabbed a tissue and put laundry detergent on it and scrubbed it more. I also put on more water. I didn’t get rid of it, but I got the color to fade. When my mom and dad got home, I told them I got a bloody nose.
Aww!!! That first one is definitely mortifying!!!
My period story is the next: Since i got it i’ve been irregular, the first was rough waters and lasted 6 days (I was 12 years old). Between the first one and the second one spent almost 4 months, the next one came like 6 months later. My mom was worry and we went to see a doctor, the doctor said it was normal but said i needed to take pills. My mom wasn’t agree, because she didn’t want me to take pills at such young age so she wanted a second opinion. We went with another doctor this time with a homeopath, she gave me drops and a few weeks later got my period. I though that will help me with my problem, but after that period everything seem to be just like the begining. At that point i was just uncomfotarble and i didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t have my period in like 5 months and everytime lasted less days and with lighter flow. The last time i got it was like almost a year ago, that last time was the worst. I had really bad cramps, with super heavy flow. Now i’m about to turn 17 and i don’t want to go to another doctor. I’m scared because i started to read information about it, until now that i found this and i hope you can help me.
(:
*Im sorry if there is something misspelled, i tried my best. I’m from Mexico and my english isn’t the best.
Mine has always been rough waters. In my teen years, it was heavy beyond belief (super plus tampons AND super heavy pads in less than 5 hours for about 3-4 days), irregular (2-8 weeks between cycles was the norm, so was skipping until 20), and death cramps that nothing could touch. I went on the pill 6 years ago, but through my journey with menstrual cups learned that I’m still losing what’s considered to be on the very heavy end, even though I can’t believe how much lighter it is. Haven’t talked to the doc about that (but will be next time I’m there). But I am curious about what fixes there could be if I ever decide to have kids and need to go off of my miracle pill.
I must say, though, that the whole menstrual cup deal has made me look at it much differently and actually (gasp) appreciate the process. It’s exciting to have a new, fresh attitude towards everything after all of this time fighting it.
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like we have similar stories. I agree, I’ve come to love my period as I’ve gotten older and addressed all the issues. 🙂
Thank you so much Natalie! I aim to please! 🙂 I would love to see if we can help you get your period back! Please send us an email to

Ah Nicole, you are speaking my language here. I went on the birth control pill for all the reasons you did! I then came off the pill at the end of last year (after about 10 years on it). We are ready to have a baby but my period has never returned! Thank you for sharing your story with all of us, you’re such an inspiration. xx
