Let’s talk about Green Juice.  I know, I know. If you’re anything like how I used to be you’re probably gagging just thinking about it. You’d rather juice a deli sandwich than drink that shit! I totally get it, I’ve sooo been in your shoes. But ease up, it won’t kill you. In fact, it will save you. As with anything you consume, the more green juice you drink the more you will crave it. I’m a living example 🙂

Nowadays I drink about 16 ounces of the green stuff each day, sometimes more. Green juice is one of the best-kept beauty secrets around.  It reduces inflammation, cleanses your body, regulates your digestion and can even help you lose weight.  And, it gets better girls: juicing helps to slow and even reverse the aging process!  Um, I could stop writing here and I know you’d all run out and buy a juicer!

In addition to all that, drinking green juice balances your PH and floods your body with vitamins, minerals, enzymes and oxygen.  Juicing helps you rebuild using the best raw materials on the planet – dark leafy greens – they are the very best way to upgrade your diet and bring balance to your entire system. By removing the plant fiber in the juicing process, you instantly lighten the load on your digestion. That means that within 15 minutes of drinking your green juice your body receives a blast of liquid sunshine that nourishes your trillions of cells and restores your immune system.

You’re probably wondering if your blood sugar will go crazy without all the fiber right?  There is a common concern that juicing will cause your blood sugar to spike, since you’re taking in sugar without fiber to slow the digestion process. Lucky for you, the spike is minimal in comparison to fruit juices and juices that have a lot of beets, carrots or apples in them. This is because green vegetables score zero on the Glycemic Index, meaning that they don’t affect your blood sugar when you eat them.

So now that you are a green juice convert, here are some instructions.  It’s best to drink your juice on an empty stomach because mixing liquids with solids slows down the digestive process. So drink your juice and then wait 30 minutes to eat. Also, try and use as many organic ingredients as possible.

Here is my favorite green juice recipe:

1-2 handfuls of Kale leaves
1 cucumber
3 stalks of celery
1/2 lemon
1 apple

So simple right?  If you’re like me and get nauseous or your tummy is sensitive to strong greens, you should start with more cucumber and less dark greens.  As you get more accustomed to drinking juice everyday you can add in more greens.

You can mix it up by adding swiss chard, romaine leaves, broccoli stems (they are sweet I swear!), spinach, pears, coconut water and many more. I’ll leave it in your capable hands to decide what works for you.

Oh and one last thing.  You need to know what juicers are good right? There is a wide range of juicers to choose from, but quality is sometimes the trade-off. Is there a happy medium? Yes! I like the Breville Ikon Multispeed Juicer or the Breville Compact Electric Juicer.

So, what are you waiting for?

This is one of those things that you think is going to be super gross and then it isn’t. In fact, it’s kind of amazing! It’s also a good way to get people to strike up a conversation with you. Imagine drinking this to wake up instead of coffee – I get a lot of looks and questions on the subway in the morning!
