In 1971 President Nixon and Congress declared war on cancer. So what’s happened in the 40 years since? Just a whole lot more cancer. Today, the United States has the seventh highest cancer rate in the world!! While heart disease is on a slight decline in the U.S., the cost to treat it is expected to triple by 2030. Around the globe, diabetes deaths will double by 2030 and almost 23.6 million people will die from from heart disease and stroke. These are expected to remain the single leading causes of death.
Here’s what most of us seem to have missed: The majority of chronic diseases, including many cancers, are caused by diet, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors. Not just genetics. Actually, poor genetics often gets a bad rap. Everyone blames their issues on their genes but there’s a new player in town called epigenetics! This is the science that teaches us that our genes are not always our destiny. We can actually have a genetic predispostion for something and still avoid the trigger (bad food, toxic environments etc). And I bet you didn’t know, we can even change our DNA. Um, yeah, we are that badass!
I read a lot of stuff online about women’s health conditions like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. These poor girls and women are constantly told that PCOS is genetic and there ain’t nothing they can do about it but take a whole lotta drugs and hope for the best. Sometimes they are told that they should lose weight and then they are sent on their merry way to figure it out. What most of them are never told is that there are so many things they can do to stack the odds in their favor to prevent or even reverse these medical conditions.
Even conditions like infertility, endometriosis, PMS and PMDD, and fibroids are all influenced by the food you eat, the thoughts you think and the things you say and do.
Remember these very important things: Keep your body as clean as possible. That’s right, what’s going on in your insides is what really counts. When you eat crappy foods, junk out on sugar and salt, scream and shout, and put chemicals into and onto your body – you’re polluting your beautiful self. If you’re a mess on the inside, it’s time to start cleaning up your act.
Here’s what you should do:
Eat LOTS of plant foods and less animals, eat lots of real food and nothing fake, move your ass, breathe A LOT, stop the crazy stressing, love more than you hate, forgive others but most importantly yourself, make fun a serious priority, get rid of your to-do list (that one is hard!), say no to other people if you have to, pray as much as possible, dump the negative beliefs about yourself, make good memories, smile as much as you can and live like it’s the first day of the rest of your amazing life!
All of this good stuff = prevention. Yup, it’s that easy. We’re the ones who need to take the initiative. So tell me, what is it that you do to take care of you?
